JOKE
Steve Dippel

FAITHFUL SERVER RENE served up breakfast.  Sgt-at-Arms Doug Cargo fined Steve Dippel for NOT telling his joke.

VISITING ROTARIAN, introduced by Secretary-Elect Pat Hite was Alice Hobbs [Symphony] from the Plano Rotary Club.

GUEST, introduced by Judy Jackson, was daughter-in-law Mabrie Jackson, who is running for City Council, Place 3.  Judy told her boys to marry tall and smart and they did. Mabrie is the Vista person at Microsoft in DFW. Sgt-at-Arms Doug fined Judy for a sloppy introduction.
SPECIAL GUEST was Honorary Member Hunter Hanks.

ABSENT WERE Matt Brown, Richard Butterly, Rick Chron, George Elking, Eric Hartter, Ken Lambert, Sharon Lewis, David Marks, Don Mellor, Doug Ray and John Roach.

SPECIAL MEMBER WAS Greg Rushin who returns to work and Rotary after some hospital stay and recovery time.

SECRETARY-ELECT AND TREASURER Pat Hite had a fine moment with ROTOPIG for not being up to date on the latest SMU news about the Bush Library. He was out of town in the frozen north for the funeral of his 110 year old grandfather.

PAST-PRESIDENT ROD HOGAN
filled in for Community Service Director Rick Chron and passed out sign-up sheets for two Saturday mornings from 8-12 on March 1 and March 29 helping Medisend <LINK> package up medicines for shipment to Bangladesh.

PRESIDENT RICHARD II called on Richard Wells for an announcement about the 17th annual benefit Event to fund scholarships for the Hendrick Academy of Honor <LINK>. Richard had tickets for the Monday night Event  which used to be a Steer Roast at the Haggard Barn. Richard called on Steve Blair for more details,  but he knew even less. ROTOPIG has some fine moments on account of this bumbled announcement. Here's information from their web page: Each year we hold an annual fundraiser that we call the "Event." In 2008, the Event will be held on February 25, 2008 at the Swan Court Restaurant and Banquet Center at 2435 N Central Expressway #102, Richardson, Tx. This is a dinner and entertainment event that features a motivational group. In addition, we ask students to attend and tell their story of adversity. Hearing the facts of their lives allows contributors to know first hand how their donation is changing lives, one child at a time.

JENNIFER SMITH BECOMES A ROTOPIG FELLOW and is presented with her pig pin and oinking pig keychain flashlight. One can become a ROTOPIG FELLOW by contributing $100 to the ROTOPIG Fund [or having $100 contributed in your name]. You may opt to contribute $25 per quarter [ for four quarters ] and become a Sustaining ROTOPIG Fellow. The pig fund is used for small projects that are rooted out and don't hog a lot of money. ROTOPIG is going to start collecting fines from PIG FELLOWS, who are not wearing their pig pins.

TODAY'S PROGRAM, introduced by 1st Qtr Program Chairman Michelle Robbins, was Kim Cameron from the Plano Family Literacy Program, which was developed through an act of Congress in the early 1980's with the assistance of Congressman William Goodling. The program's purpose is to help to break the cycle of poverty and illiteracy by improving the educational opportunities of the Nation's low-income families. Through integrating early childhood education, adult literacy or adult basic education, and parenting education this program unifies a whole family literacy program. There are 40 families in the program and 40 on the waiting list. The number is limited by the space required for child care. As is our custom, a book was donated to the Nellie McCall Library at the David McCall Elementary School in the speakers' name and duly signed by her.  The book was "Books and Libraries" by  Jack Knowlton <LINK>.

MABRIE JACKSON
finally got her chance to get her money's worth.  She had paid the fee to ROTOPIG of two-bits per person for a political announcement, but didn't get much opportunity when she was introduced. Mabrie is running for City Council Place 3. As a multi-million dollar manger at Microsoft, she feels like she can provide good money management expertise for the City of Plano. She was last here on July 7, 2006 <LINK> to present us with a $1000 check from Microsoft for our Foundation.
