TODAY'S PROGRAM, introduced by Program Chairthing Michelle
Robbins was Marcia Upson, President of Naturally Slim <LINK>.
Marcia is a family nurse practitioner and the daughter of the founder. She
is certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and received
both her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Texas Womans'
University. Marcia helps her clients gain control of their health through
knowledge. Her students consistently remark that they now possess a
lifestyle of eating the foods they like while improving their health and
losing weight. She pointed out that sugar consumption has gone from 10
pounds a year per person in the 1940's to over 200 pounds a year in the
2000's. Being overweight increases risk factors for cancer, diabetes, gall
bladder disease, heart disease, hypertension, respiratory problems, high
cholesterol, osteoarthritis, infertility, and gastro esophageal reflux. The
increase in adult-onset diabetes contributed to a 64% rise in diabetes
treatment from 1987 to 2002. Healthcare costs are exceeding what employers
can afford. As is our custom, a book was donated to the Nellie McCall
Library at the David McCall Elementary School in honor of the speaker and
duly signed by her. The book was A Chocolate Moose for Dinner by
Fred Gwynne. <LINK>
