PRESIDENT RANDY called for announcements: David Marks talked about Operation Veteran Support, that will be meeting returning troops on Saturday, Sept 6, at DFW with the support of Blue Star Mothers. Also there will be a Christmas Card project again this year as well as the Fisher House opening and a Toys for Tots Motorcycle Run. Bill Moore said that we have 32 pallets of books that need to be repackaged into about 800 book cartons of 12 x12 x 18. A Signup sheet is being circulated for the Adoption Awareness Picnic on September 20th. Richard Biggers says we need more stuff, especially larger items, for Oktoberfest Auction. Jennifer Smith showed the posters now available for placing in businesses. Richard Butterly announced a committee meeting to learn how to approach donors for gifts. Judy Jackson says tool donations have been good and next week is Geek Week for geeky donations.
TODAY'S PROGRAM, introduced by Program Chairthing David Marks, was District Governor L.B. Showalter, who got the respect he deserved. He was accompanied by his lovely wife Donna, who dressed as an African Woman from Malawi, Africa. She told the story of her life and her village. L.B. challenged us to donate $208 to District 5810 which will support 4 children to go to advanced schooling beyond the 6th grade and help break the poverty cycle through education. Everyday 26,000 children die due to preventable diseases. At the District Conference in Frisco, April 17, 2009, the District will be giving $100,000 to the club that has the best Community Needs Assessment for their project. Applications are due December 31st. L.B. also encouraged us to get our nomination [if any] in for District Governor and to fill out an application for the Presidential Citation Award. We gave L.B. a check to District 5810 for $1000 for the Community Needs Project. As is our custom, a book was donated to the Nellie McCall Library at the David McCall Elementary School in the speaker's name and duly signed by him. the book was "The Wheels on the Race Car."
